Not long ago video game publisher EA publicly proposed an unsolicited acquisition of Take 2. Neither of these guys are what I would think of as ideal video game publishers. EA knows how to make the money, but mostly by doing the same thing over and over. Now that's not bad if you want their stuff and if you're a stock holder, but when they gobble up other publishers and developers they regularly hork it all up they're a less appealing to someone like me. Meanwhile Take 2 had issues making money for a while despite being tied up with some seriously big franchises. It was hard to get why they had such issues with turning a profit Oh yeah their officers were busy back dating stock options and despite that the board still had to forcibly oust the previous administration, yeesh.
So they're not perfect but heck Take 2 owns some groups like Firaxis (Civ) and as far as I know Firaxis has been left to its own devices by 2K and frankly I think sometimes when you've got a good business group in your business that's the best thing to do.
EA isn't exactly known for that kind of approach. Take the Sim City franchise. They acquired Maxis and later released a buggy and horrendously performing Sim City 4. It had numerous bugs (nothing new to EA) and had a pile of weird gameplay complications due to the city size limits that seemed to be introducted to improve performance for an already poorly performing game. What was an essentially free expansion pack (they had a rebate for the retail price if you bought it within the first month), and a pile of patches later the game ran .. . well it still was hitchy and such but you could play the game. The result? EA executives moaned about how it didn't sell well right away ... Later Sim City 5 was pulled from the hands of Maxis (I'm sure they're busy with Spore) and they made SimCity Societies. . . utter garbage. There's no mystery what makes Sim City a great game but still EA horks it up and then somehow makes it worse.
So anyway along with EA's announcement that they want to acquire Take 2 came this site EaTake2.com where EA seems to be trying to make a public case to the stock holders. Take 2 reportedly turned EA down.
Anyhow some folks came up with a nice rebuttal to the EaTake2 site. EatTake2.com. Nice.
Where in the World is Osama bin Laden?
That looks like a great film.
