The good news about Linux is that you can see the source. The bad news about Linux is the core developers don't give a fuck about backwards compatibility with other people's device drivers. This means you have to deal with a lot of code that changes over and over as they make ridiculous changes to the APIs with every dot release.

It used to be better when the dev kernels were a different branch from the production ones but with 2.6 I've seen as much as 200k lines change between one "build" of 2.6.9 and another, and they've been known to rewrite the DMA APIs, completely, at the drop of a hat.

What kind of work have you been doing?
